"Miles of Smiles" New Jersey Oral Health Newsletter
The “Miles of Smiles” New Jersey School Oral Health Newsletter is developed and mailed to over 3,500 schools throughout the State. The newsletter raises awareness and provides important information on timely oral health topics for school nurses and other professionals on issues that impact school-age children.
The newsletter reinforces the importance of addressing timely oral health topics identified by school nurses such as: importance of brushing and flossing, fluoride as a preventive measure, oral effects of tobacco use, healthy food choices, oral piercing, dental emergencies, prevention of oral injury and use of mouth guards, oral piercing, and orthodontic oral care.
The newsletter mailing has included additional resources such as factsheets, dental emergency guide, tooth eruption charts and posters for display in the school setting. The newsletter is also available on the New Jersey Department of Health Children’s Oral Health Education website at http://www.nj.gov/health/fhs/oral
The “Miles of Smiles” newsletter has been mailed to school nurses for approximately 20 years. Since the newsletter provides oral health information on a variety of topics pertaining to school-age children, the newsletter continues to be widely disseminated. Schools nurses are periodically contacted for suggestions on oral health topics to be included.
