In 1999, the Matheny School and Hospital contacted University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Dental School (UMDNJ-NJ Dental School) for the purpose of starting a dental treatment facility at Matheny. Matheny School and Hospital in Peapack has been providing rehabilitation and teaching for individuals who are severely physically and mentally challenged. With the support and council of UMDNJ-NJ Dental School, a plan to construct a dental treatment center along with a medical treatment center at Matheny was developed. The UMDNJ-NJ Dental School and Matheny School and Hospital Dental Treatment Center was established in response to a lack of adequate treatment facilities and to address the Healthy People 2010 objectives to improve oral health for this special population. The financial support for this project was achieved through a successful application for funding from a National Foundation as well as a corporate grant. The University Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey supported and helped Matheny apply for the grants. The dental center will have a predominant Medicaid payer mix to provide revenue. A "break-even revenue" projection will be used to assess the operation for the dental center. UMDNJ-NJ Dental School is employed to operate and provide personnel and expertise to treat patients and train residents. An intermediary facility was created to start treatment while the major clinical space is finished. Matheny School and Hospital is the owner and administrator of the clinic. This practice is being developed to meet the treatment needs of physically and mentally challenged dental patients, and to train providers in the treatment of this special population.
