ASTDD helps the people who lead and staff State and Territorial Oral Health Programs excel with orientation and mentoring for new directors, ongoing learning, peer connection, and hands-on technical assistance for all members.

Guided by ASTDD’s strategic framework, Charting the Future, ASTDD’s Purpose, Vision, & Roadmap for Impact, these offerings will grow into a coordinated member hub, with an expanded à la carte menu of support and new Communities of Practice. Here is what is available now.

Strong programs need strong leaders. ASTDD builds the skills, confidence, and capacity of current and emerging oral health leaders through structured orientation, peer support, and professional development, guided by the ASTDD State Oral Health Program Competencies. The Framework calls for a formal leadership development pathway, including an ASTDD Leadership Lab that will be established through the ASTDD Foundation.

When a new state or territorial dental director is appointed, ASTDD hosts a welcome and orientation session that introduces the organization, key federal and national partners, and the tools and people available to help. In 2024, 12 of 17 new directors completed orientation.

ASTDD offers webinars and educational opportunities throughout the year on topics ranging from surveillance and data use to fluoridation, workforce, and program management. Recordings and related documents are available to members.

In-depth training — including pre-conference workshops at the National Oral Health Conference — gives members practical skills they can apply immediately.

Some of the best learning happens between peers. ASTDD communication channels connect members facing similar challenges so they can exchange ideas and solutions.

New directors can opt into ASTDD’s yearlong Peer Support Program. Each participant is matched with an experienced peer, and together they develop a technical assistance plan with regular check-ins throughout the year. In 2024, nearly half of new directors took part.

The National Oral Health Conference (NOHC) is the premier gathering for dental public health professionals. NOHC 2027 will be held April 12–14, 2027, in St. Louis, Missouri, with weekend workshops on April 10 and 11. Registration opens December 2026. ASTDD members receive the discounted member registration rate.

ASTDD consultants provide tailored technical assistance to state and territorial oral health programs on surveillance and the Basic Screening Survey, program planning and evaluation, fluoridation, school-based programs, workforce, and more. In 2024, ASTDD provided surveillance-related assistance to 21 states. A coordinated Member Hub and expanded public-facing resource guide are planned under the Strategic Framework.
