In order to reduce pain, disability, and death caused by nicotine addition, AAPD recommends routine screening for tobacco use, treating tobacco dependence, preventing tobacco use among children and adolescents and educating the public on the enormous health and societal cost of tobacco.
Enrollees in the Medicaid Program smoke cigarettes at a higher rate than their privately insured counterparts (25.3% vs 11.8%). Medicaid coverage for Tobacco Cessation Treatment has the potential to reduce smoking, smoking related disease and health care expenditures for its enrollees.
