Fluoridation Advisory Board
In 1997, Louisiana Senate Bill 963 established the Fluoridation Advisory Board. Duties of the Board include assisting public water systems with obtaining funding to implement water fluoridation, assisting the director of the state Oral Health Program with the educating of the general public, and advising the state Fluoridation Program. The 14 members of the Fluoridation Advisory Board are appointed by the Governor upon recommendation of Louisiana Dental Association, and confirmed by the Senate. Members include: a practicing dentist from each of the 9 administrative regions of Department of Health & Hospitals, a representative of the Maternal and Child Health Coalition, a representative of the Louisiana Medical Society, a representative of the LSU Health Sciences Center, a representative of the Louisiana Rural Water Association, and a representative of the Louisiana Dental Hygienists Association.
The Fluoridation Advisory Board has been a great asset when conducting community outreach regarding fluoridation and when legislation is proposed regarding fluoridation.
