Dental Public Health Activities: Descriptive Summaries
Northwest New Jersey Dental Coalition Treatment Center- Archived Summary
In 2000, the Northwest New Jersey Dental Coalition and the Center for Treatment of Medicaid and Poverty Level Population of Sussex and Warren Counties invited the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Dental School (UMDNJ-NJ Dental School) to meet for the purpose of creating a dental clinic. The Northwest New Jersey Dental Coalition, with members consisting of Newton Hospital Freeholders of Sussex County and local health care providers, recognized the need in Sussex and Warren counties for a local treatment center to improve access to dental care for underserved Medicaid recipients. The Coalition contracted UMDNJ-NJ Dental School as a consultant to develop the treatment facility, the Northwest New Jersey Dental Coalition Treatment Center. Funding for the dental center was acquired through legislative initiatives and grants from corporate interest groups. The center will collect revenue for services delivered to a target population of 4,000 Medicaid recipients. The Coalition will maintain responsibility for the administration of the center; operations, services and expertise will be provided by UMDNJ-NJ Dental School. A building close to Newton Hospital is being renovated and the Coalition will rent space for the dental treatment center. The Northwest New Jersey Dental Coalition Treatment Center is a model of state and corporate funding with community backing, which will help its sustainability.
